While the discussion about how much screen time is proper for children rages on between educators, psychologists, and parents, it’s another developing technology in the form of artificial intelligence and machine learning that is starting to alter education tools and institutions and varying what the future might look like in education. AI and Education
According to Pakistan’s Maintainable Development Goals, by 2025, literacy rate will be 90 percent but the fact is, over 20 million children still out of school shows that Pakistan lags behind it. In the most rural parts of Pakistan, most students have to walk long distances to get to the nearest school, which is one of the explanations for enormous education gaps. We all settle on a fact that there are thousands of things that a human instructor can offer which machines cannot, but the future could see more students being educated by tutors. Artificial intelligence tools such as personalized learning assistants can make simpler learning by making teaching services and learning materials available to all students, wherever they are. Machines can be computerized to help students learn basic concepts without a tutor. Some teaching programs based on artificial intelligence already exist and can help students with basic mathematics, writing, and other subjects.
In my opinion, even though we cannot compete with US or China on the academic asset, however, in the next five years, if Pakistan effectively develops infrastructure and workforce for artificial intelligence, we can bid for leading in a few areas of artificial intelligence. Also, for greater development, funding has to be extended to private companies for research and development. To accomplish this objective, the public segment should work with the private segment to discover the private segment’s needs and understand its structure. When international firms see the potential return on the investment, they will invest in Pakistan which will ultimately boost the economy.
